CDC National Healthcare Safety Network Data Validation

The HAI/AR Program is currently conducting external validation of the following infection measures reported to NHSN for 2015 and 2016 reporting periods: central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, and Clostridium difficile. HAI/AR epidemiologists will perform confidential chart reviews to determine the accuracy for which infections were reported into NHSN. Outcomes of this service include improved proficiency in application of NHSN surveillance definitions and preparation for external CMS validation.

Validation methodologies provided by CDC are followed for these activities and are available at https://www.cdc.gov/nhsn/validation/. To participate, infection preventionists must send line lists of positive cultures (e.g., blood, urine, stool) from validation locations (e.g., intensive care units, wards) to the HAI/AR Program via secure file transfer. Charts are then selected for review based on targeted and random selection methods described in CDC external validation guidance. After an in-person meeting to review determination accuracy, infection preventionists are sent  a report indicating the following metrics: sensitivity, specificity, positive predicative value, and negative predicative value with any further recommendations or resources that may be necessary to assist with NHSN surveillance competencies.

All validation meetings are confidential and facility-identifiable results are not distributed outside of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Section of the Louisiana Office of Public Health. To participate, contact Andrea Salinas (HAI epidemiologist) at Andrea.Salinas@LA.gov.
