The Louisiana Department of Health's Office of Women's Health and Community Health is continuing its "Listen to H.E.R.: Hearing, Empowering, Responding" town hall series, with the next town hall taking place in Lake Charles.
Extreme heat and drought have contributed to wildfires throughout Louisiana, which can negatively impact air quality. LDH is urging residents in areas where wildfires are burning or air quality is otherwise poor to take precautions to minimize the impact poor air quality can have on their health.
Vaccines will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 24 at The Page, 542 N. Rampart St., and at parish health units in the New Orleans area.
Tragically, LDH has updated the total number of heat-related deaths to 25 for the months of June, July and August after an extensive examination of data from Louisiana Vital Records.
LDH continues to work toward fostering a breastfeeding-friendly environment in Louisiana and improving statewide breastfeeding rates.
"This summer, the National Weather Service has issued a record number of excessive heat warnings for Louisiana," said Gov. Edwards. "The Louisiana Department of Health reports that the state has already exceeded the average number of annual heat-related emergency room visits. Additionally, drought conditions and a significant drop in the Mississippi River's water level have added stress on water supplies and agriculture.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 5 at Ouachita Parish Health Unit (PHU), 1650 DeSiard St., Monroe, and is free to attend.
The campaign will raise awareness about the importance of immunizations and reverse declining vaccination rates among children.
The event features family-friendly activities, COVID-19 vaccines, car seat safety checks and more.
