Surgeon General

As Surgeon General of the Louisiana Department of Health, Dr. Ralph Abraham is co-equal with the Secretary within the Department’s organizational chart and is charged with crafting health policy, including healthcare workforce development; advocating for wellness and disease prevention; and coordinating with other state agencies and institutions to improve health outcomes in Louisiana. 

The Surgeon General is appointed by the Governor and must be a licensed and practicing physician in Louisiana. The Surgeon General absorbs the duties of the previous State Health Officer role.

Act 464 - Dispensing of Ivermectin

Pursuant to La. R.S. 37:1218.3, enacted by Act 464 of the 2025 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature, a healthcare professional with prescriptive authority within the Louisiana Department of Health ("LDH") may issue a Standing Order under which a pharmacist may dispense Ivermectin to an individual who is at least eighteen years of age.
