The Louisiana Medicaid program has made its first payments to primary care providers participating in the new CommunityCARE Immunization Pay-for-Performance Initiative. This initiative was enacted in July of last year with the goal of increasing child immunizations in the state by monetarily rewarding doctors who make sure children receive their necessary shots.
Poorer women and children in Louisiana are more likely to qualify for Medicaid health care coverage than if they lived in all but 10 other states. This finding was reported by Public Citizen, a national advocacy group, in a report entitled, Unsettling Scores: A Ranking of State Medicaid Programs.
On Monday, April 23, DHH Secretary Dr. Fred Cerise will be in New Orleans to help celebrate the grand opening of two new community clinics, and the expansion of two existing clinics. The clinics were made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Health Resource Services Administration (HRSA). Dr. Elizabeth Duke, HRSA director, will be on hand to present the grant checks.

Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is issuing a warning to medical providers throughout Louisiana about a false advisory in circulation which states health care providers are required by new state and federal regulations to post hand-washing posters. The advisory claims the Louisiana Healthcare Compliance Center issued the policy that requires these posters be displayed “at all handwashing facilities.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced a change in gonorrhea treatment guidelines. According to the CDC, gonorrhea treatments should now be limited to a single class of antibiotics.
Baton Rouge – More Louisiana children will be eligible for the Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP) because of the annual increase in the Federal Poverty Level effective this month. This increase allows working families to earn more income and still qualify for LaCHIP, which provides no-cost health coverage for uninsured children younger than age 19.
Baton Rouge --- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has issued changes to the eligibility requirements for the Greater New Orleans Health Service Corps. The program is designed to lure health care professionals back to the New Orleans area by providing up to $110,000 to those who agree to work in the parishes of Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard for three years.

Baton Rouge – State health officials have been unable to determine the cause of the recent outbreak of a stomach illness that affected about 200 students earlier this month at Livonia High School in Pointe Coupee Parish.
