Health Officials Urge Restaurant Safety in Wake of Hurricane Katrina
Baton Rouge – The Department of Health and Hospitals’ Office of Public Health, Sanitarian Services staff will continue to inspect food establishments in Orleans Parish, allowing those that are approved to resume operations and serve customers.

Hurricanes Did Not Spawn Significant Increase in West Nile
Baton Rouge – Although the Department of Health and Hospitals today reports 30 new cases of West Nile virus, the recent hurricanes do not appear to have increased the disease in Louisiana, as some had feared.

Deceased Victims Update 10-10-2005
At this time, state officials, working in conjunction with coroners from local parishes, have recovered 1021 bodies. This is an increase from 1,003 recovered bodies on Oct. 7, 2005.

EPA NEWS RELEASE: EPA Orders Companies Violating Safety Requirements to Stop Delivering Water
Today the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued emergency administrative orders requiring two companies that have been providing water to businesses in New Orleans to stop delivery out of concern that the trucks may contain hazardous constituents.

Private Water Well Testing in Lafayette and Lake Charles Area
Baton Rouge - The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Louisiana Rural Water Association is offering the public free bacteriological testing (for total coliforms and E. coli) for their private drinking water wells and systems.

Boil Advisory Update - Health Dept. Removes Boil Advisory for Majority of East Bank of New Orleans
Baton Rouge – State health officials have issued an update to conditions of Louisiana water systems that were seriously impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Boil advisories have been lifted for some parish water systems, in particular the system supplying water to the east bank of New Orleans.

DHH Begins Spraying for Mosquitoes in Grand Isle and Plaquemines Parish
Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has developed a management plan in anticipation of the hatching of mosquitoes and flies due to the massive flooding in the area. Mosquito control is needed to protect public health from nuisances and diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, as well as flies.
