HIV cases in Louisiana drop to lowest in more than a decade

Effective July 1, 2019 in order to comply with the requirements of HCR 5, the department amends the provisions governing the reimbursement methodology for inpatient hospital services to increase outlier pool payments.

Today the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved Louisiana’s Medicaid State Plan Amendment (SPA) authorizing the state to negotiate supplemental rebate agreements from prescription drug manufacturers. The SPA permits the state to negotiate supplemental rebate agreements using a new “modified subscription” model that initially focuses on antiviral agents for hepatitis C and that promotes eliminating the hepatitis C virus statewide.
“This new model has the potential to save many lives and improve the health of our citizens. It is an important day for our state, for our partner Asegua Therapeutics, for providers, but most importantly for the patients and their families who will benefit from treatment,” said Governor Edwards.

The screenings are for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis. They are set for June 24-27, leading up to National HIV Testing Day.
An algal bloom is the rapid growth of algae on the surface of the water. The Department is advising people to avoid contact, including swimming, with blue-green algae as exposure can be harmful for some people.
The Louisiana Department of Health is co-sponsoring a symposium to provide important information about environmental impacts on children’s health, which will be held in New Orleans. This month, the Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Public Health, Walgreens and other local health agencies will be holding 43 screening opportunities for sexually transmitted infections, or STI screenings.
The Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Public Health has updated its disease reporting requirements to help the state tackle three diseases that cause significant illness, including death: HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C. This reporting change requires the reporting of all test results of these conditions.
