The Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Public Health is sponsoring a community-wide presentation of the County Health Rankings from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3 on the second floor of the Rapides Foundation Building, 1101 Fourth St. #200, Alexandria.
“Accreditation demonstrates that the state health department has been rigorously examined and meets or exceeds national standards that promote continuous quality improvement for public health,” said Dr. Alexander Billioux, assistant secretary of the Office of Public Health.
Hepatitis C is the leading infectious disease killer of our time, but it is also one of the few viruses that has a cure—direct-acting antiviral medications. Several years ago, Louisiana set out to eliminate the disease to reduce preventable suffering and premature death.

In its most recent comprehensive audit of the management and finances of the Louisiana Department of Health and its Medicaid program, the Legislative Auditor identified nine findings. The findings included process and record keeping errors and a single overpayment of $8,112 to home and community-based providers because services were not properly documented.
The cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge are joining with the Louisiana Department of Health in pledging their support for the U=U Campaign. In February, LDH Secretary Dr. Rebekah Gee gave the Department’s support for the campaign.
Taking Aim at Cancer in Louisiana (TACL), an organization formed last year to address Louisiana’s high rates of cancer, reached a milestone last month when its executive committee adopted bylaws and elected officers to establish TACL (pronounced ‘tackle’) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. The Louisiana Department of Health is currently providing leadership and support for the initiative.
Dr. Rebekah Gee, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, said that having three pharmaceutical companies submit a response means the State is one giant step closer to its goal of eliminating hepatitis C in Louisiana.
Because of the commitment of this administration, Louisiana now has an eligibility and enrollment system that is more robust than what had been in place for decades. The new system runs more frequent checks on information that drives eligibility decisions, including employment status and income. This means that as the economy improves and people's income increases, Medicaid is alerted and cases are closed, as appropriate.
